What is ViRSP?
The Visiting Research-Student Program (ViRSP) is a platform that connects students with research labs for an opportunity to engage in new or ongoing research projects, preferably during the summer break or just after graduation. The program allows students to gain research experience while contributing to the project. The ViRSP also exposes the lab and the school to the participants, promoting their research and facilities, as well as increasing the probability of receiving graduate student applications from the participants and other potential students from their schools. The ViRSP is also a valuable program for graduate students looking to enhance their research experience, as well as for labs and schools looking to promote their research and attract more graduate student applications. To encourage efficiency of the model, host labs will be expected to pay stipends to the participants and participants will also be expected to cover their own travel expenses.
Why ViRSP?
Researchers are generally open to hiring undergraduate students into their labs as a way of cultivating scientific interests and encouraging them to pursue graduate studies. However, scheduling conflicts between students' coursework and research calls diminishes students' engagement and often lead to a perception of science, research, and graduate school as arduous or unappealing. The Visiting Research-Student Program (ViRSP) provides an avenue for students to engage in research without the burden of coursework, thereby allowing them to appreciate the significance and fulfillment of research. This experience may have a positive impact on students' interest in pursuing graduate programs.
